Is there a deficit of computers and phones because of the crisis in the semiconductor market and sanctions
- Mar 29
On the crisis of semiconductors, which are used in the production of cars, computers, medical equipment, they speak since the beginning of the year: demand grew faster than proposal (17% against 6%) with practically extremely loaded production facilities. Now the situation has been aggravated by the Taiwanese semiconductor company (TSMC) imposed sanctions against Russia for the supply of its semiconductors. TSMC closes 54% of world queries, in second place - Samsung, which also introduced sanctions, with a market share of 13%. We understand how it will affect the market of computers and other techniques.
Where semiconductors are used
Analysts The Boston Consulting Group agency predict that the global deficit of the components will reduce the production of cars for 7-9 million units of transport per year, despite the plans for the gradual increase in the production of semiconductors from the largest players in the market.
Will technology deficiency in Russia
In addition to the crisis in the semiconductor market, the main manufacturers of processors for PCs and laptops in the world - Intel and AMD - in early March announced the suspension of the supply of their products to Russia. Some smartphone manufacturers also left the Russian market, or reduced delivery. Against this background, prices and demand are growing even on used gadgets. In particular, in March, the demand for them increased by 44% compared with February.
A sharp increase in the interest of Russians to the market for the used electronics sooner or later will be replaced by its decline. However, according to the senior analyst of the company Data Insight Elizabeth Hobotin, this will happen only when the secondary market "will no longer press the unrealized demand for new products."
But none of the analysts do not take about the specific timing and dates today.
What are there alternatives and pressure levers
Russia has its own processors "Baikal" and "Elbrus". They are fully designed in Russia, but losing Western counterparts and in performance, and in value. In addition, the technological production of these processors was at the TSMC plant, and the Taiwanese company has already declared the suspension of this production.
Another nuance - Neon and Palladium are needed for semiconductors. According to various estimates from 70% to 90% of neon, it is produced in Russia and Ukraine. And over the past three weeks, this inert gas has risen in price by nine times, and Ukraine stopped exporting neon due to the construction stop at the plants of the two largest suppliers - Krionina and Inghaz. The largest deposit of palladium in the world is located in Norilsk, it provides 35% of the US need. But there is no public information on how this pressure lever can be used in sanction negotiations. Moreover, on the background of what is happening to increase its share in the neo production market can China.
