The first in Russia Rosatom will build a plant for the production of traction lithiumion batteries in Kaliningrad
- Mar 29
In the Kaliningrad region there will be its own production of lithium-ion batteries for electric transport. The construction of the plant will be engaged in Rosatom - a recognized leader of the Russian industry of high technologies. Its power fully provide their own needs. Then why "Rosatom" increase production? Explain.
In the Kaliningrad region, a strategic agreement was signed on the construction of a plant of lithium-ion batteries for transport on electric traction. The parties to the Agreement - the Government of the Kaliningrad region (will provide a charging infrastructure for electric transport), Holding Avtotor (will be engaged in the production of electric vehicles) and Rosatom (build a plant of lithium-ion batteries).
The treaty implies not just a commercial agreement. This is a long-term development of the entire infrastructure of the Kaliningrad region. Thanks to the new plant, the demand for electric cars in the region by 2030 should grow by 50%.
The plant will be located on the site of the Baltic NPP already in 2026, ready to provide annual production capacity in 4 gigavatt-hours. And by 2030, the peak should be 10 gigavatt-hours. And even this is not the limit, because Rosatom initially laid the limit by 12 with an excess Gigawatt-hours, given that today the demand for batteries in the country significantly exceeds the supply.
Russian IT startup Sfera is one of the largest domestic projects in the field of creating digital ecosystems. Developers and testers on the eve of the release are engaged in debugging the product and are open to investors' proposals. Read more about the project by reference.
Production under Kaliningrad is based on one of the most progressive technologies for creating batteries based on lithium. Since March of this year, the company "Rosatom" has become the owner of 49% of South Korean Eneertech, which offers advanced solutions, for example, in the field of creating batteries with nickel, manganese and low-voltage electrodes. The pilot batch of lithium-ion batteries should come off the conveyor next year.
However, Russian specialists and more than 60 years are engaged in developments related to Lithium. Rosatom first of all, it was borne by the re-equipment of its own fleet of electric transport by lithium-ion batteries, and exclusively at the expense of domestic resources.
The batteries are based on the cathodes of the Novosibirsk Plant of Himkoncentrats and produced NGOs Centerotekh in Novouralsk.
To date, Rosatom fully provides themselves with batteries for electric transport, but still invests in the production of energy collectors until the creation of new industries. And in this case, it is not only in ensuring the growing market of electric motors. Business in guaranteed workplaces for qualified specialists, that is, the company actively invests in human capital.
How do you think it is possible to extend the experience of developing your own autonomous production to other industries, for example, aviation?
