First look at a new data transfer application with iPhone on Android from Google Switch to Android
- Apr 14
For quite a long time, Google is developing a completely new way to transition from the iPhone to the Android device. Back in July 2021, it became known that the company is preparing a new "Switch to Android" application operating on the iPhone. And today, the 9To5Google publisher has been able to get the screenshots of this application in their hands.
When switching from one Android device to another, you can simply connect two phones via cable or wireless network and copy all applications, contacts, messages, photos and more. But now copying data from the iPhone on Android was not so simple and required to create a backup of the data on Google disk and restore them manually. In Android 12, everything has become a bit simpler: it has the ability to copy contacts, applications and media files, but only through the Lightning cable.
In the case of a transition from Android on the iPhone Apple has been offering a special "Move iOS" for Android for more than five years, which is trying to simplify the process of attachment to the Apple ecosystem.
The new Switch to Android application appeared in the App Store as an application available only by direct link. With this link, 9To5Google was able to successfully install Switch to Android on the iPhone and run it.
On the first page, the application explains that it is how it can copy from your iPhone to your new Android phone, including "photos, videos, contacts and more."
Next, you are invited to scan the QR code, which should appear on the Android device during the configuration and recovery process. Your new Android phone will create a point of access to which your iPhone connects. After connecting, most important data will be transmitted over a wireless network.
As you can see on the third image from above, you can copy "Contacts", "Calendar Events", "Photo" and "Video". But at the bottom there is a warning that only photos and videos stored locally on the iPhone will be copied to the new Android, and the media files in iCloud will be processed later.
After completing the copy, you remind you of the need to disable the iMessage function to receive messages from friends in the form of SMS. The last step of the Android transition process is a request for data transfer from ICloud to Google Disk / Google Photo. The "Start Request" button simply opens Safari on the ICloud support page, where you can "request a copy of your data."
In general, Switch to Android is a fairly simple tool that allows you to leave the iPhone ecosystem as it can be easier. At the moment it is unclear when Google plans to run Switch to Android, but considering how long the Apple's own application "Move to iOS" is located on Google Play, Google's alternative is already quite strong enough.
