Following Gazprom NOVATEK will switch to calculations in rubles on LNG projects in the Arctic
- Apr 19
The President of the Russian Federation issued a decree on the transfer of export liquefied natural gas to the national currency. First of all, this refers to LNG projects in the Arctic. How it will affect the external economy and relationships with European countries, we will analyze more.
V. V. Putin signed a federal law, which states that all calculations on LNG projects in the Arctic will be carried out in rubles. The main domestic producer of liquefied gas in the Arctic is the NOVATEK PJSC.
Most of the products produced on the Yamal Peninsula are intended for export. From the plant "Yamal LNG" and the "Arctic LNG - 2" plant, liquefied gas will be delivered to the specialized marine storage facilities of Murmansk and Kamchatka Territory. And already from there to deliver to the consumer from other countries.

Now the sale of all products of plants and services for the extraction, shipment, delivery and storage of liquefied gas will be made in rubles. Tariffing of gas purchases can occur in euros or dollars, but payment is in rubles for the current stock exchange rate in Russia.
For a long time, the purchase of domestic resources occurred on the principle of postpayment. However, European banks and consumers have become systematically detaining cash transfers. Therefore, in the new model of the international economy of Russia, the supply of resources will occur only after their payment and transfer it to rubles.
As you remember, the initial Russian Federation began to rebuild the pipeline gas export schemes. Now it affects LNG, which may mostly be supplied to friendly countries - China and India. Supplies to the European part of the continent promise to significantly reduce. And this is just the beginning. According to the statements of Russian officials, gradually all trade in Russia will go to pay in rubles.
What do you think, how much will Russia win from the adoption of this decision? Or is it only aggravating the already tense relationship with Europe? Can Europeans be able to quickly find an alternative to Russian products?
