The AMD Instinct Mi 250X accelerator received the world's first two -chip graphic processor.
In the second half of the year, the Radeon RX 7000 video cards should appear, in which the two upper GPUs will also be two -bit.
But AMD is already working on a much more complex and, in fact, unique GPU, which it would be not very correct to call a graphic processor.
The first data and even a muddy photo appeared on the network, which, apparently, is taken from AMD internal documents.
AMD implements the idea of a seven-year ago with an exaflopsy monster uniting GPU, CPU and HBM memory into a single APU processor.
So, we are talking about the new hybrid processor Instinct Mi300. The Instinct Mi300 is a line, and a specific model can be called Instinct Mi 350X or somehow, but this is not particularly important. It is important that technically it will not even be GPU, but APU or hybrid accelerator.
The processor nuclei of the Zen 4 architecture will be added to the graphic processor of the architecture of CDNA 3. In addition, this chip will have its own HBM memory. The documentation says what APU Instinct is, but as the result of AMD itself will call this solution, we will find out only after the announcement of the company itself.
In any case, the emphasis will clearly be made mainly on the graphic part, since these are still Instinct accelerators.
It can also be assumed that not all models of the Instinct Mi300 line will have processor nuclei. But in any case, it will be the largest, complex and productive hybrid processor.
Judging by the image and early data, APU can receive eight computing chiplets and eight memory microcircuits. At the same time, it is still unknown whether each chip will have processor nuclei or, for example, they will take a separate chiplet or several.
In any case, this is an extremely unusual and, in fact, a unique solution, the performance of which can only be guessed. But earlier, AMD somehow mentioned the product of the exaflopse level.
Separately, it is worth noting an interesting detail. The fact is that the first rumors about some large APU AMD appeared back in 2019. Then in September last year it was reported that the Instinct Mi300 could receive both processor and graphic nuclei, and recently information appeared about the eight -chip GPU with a total area of the interposeur 2750 mm2.
In addition, AMD itself spoke of the concept of Exascale Heterogeneous Processor back in 2015. At that time, the company talked about the possibility of combining 32 Zen nuclei, some kind of GPU of an unknown configuration and memory of HBM.
Later, in 2020, it became known that AMD continues to work on the project at least on the basic basis, as evidenced by the company's patents.
Apparently, the concept presented seven years ago will finally be implemented in the new generation of Instinct accelerators.
Most likely, they will come out at the end of this or beginning of next year, since the documentation states that the first chips will leave the laboratory in the third quarter.
