Unexpected turn Russia wants to build a gas pipeline from Africa to Europe
- May 16
Russia reduces the supply of gas in a western direction. The European Union countries are forced to look for gas in another place. Germany has already encountered a reduction in gas supplies from Russia and will be forced to save fuel. As a result, gas in these countries is growing rapidly. To reduce dependence on Russian fuel supply, European states are actively discussing the issues of cooperation with Africa countries. But here again Russia.
In the western part of Africa, such regions as Nigeria, Senegal and Angola, there is an unused potential of liquefied natural gas. According to OPEC in 2020, Nigeria ranks 4th among the members of the organization for proven gas reserves - 5.7 billion cubic meters. m. According to 2019, the share of Nigeria among the world gas reserves was 2.79%.
Given these facts on the agenda is the issue of building a gas pipeline, according to which natural gas from Nigeria will enter Morocco and further to Europe. The Russian side proposed investing in the construction of the pipeline.
According to the minister, the administration of President Nigeria Muhammad Bukhari intends to start building until May 2023. The preliminary cost of the project has not yet been named.
To date, the longest energy pipeline is the Druzhba oil pipeline with a length of 5500 km. It begins in Samara and passes through the territory of Belarus, Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia.
According to the plan, the total length of the gas pipeline in Africa will exceed 5.6 thousand km. This will be the longest gas pipeline in the world with the largest number of stations that provide optimal pressure parameters in the pipe.
The gas pipeline can go through Niger and Algeria. Or through Niger, Mali and Mauritania. The minister also added that the gas pipeline should deliver the gas mined in Nigeria “through many African countries to the very edge of the continent”, where Abuja will gain access to the European market.
The authorities of Morocco and Nigeria signed an agreement on the creation of a gas pipeline with an expected length of 5660 kilometers in December 2016.
The domestic IT project SFERA can rightfully be considered the most ambitious project in the world. His release is not far off. To learn more about the product, follow the link. The collection of registration applications is opened.
Again, it cannot be ruled out that the mention of Russian investors can only be a cunning “game” of the Nigerians who thus want to get the best conditions from Western partners. And for pressure on Nigeria, according to the expert, in order to abandon Russian investment, the West, as usual, has a whip and a gingerbread.
If we talk about long -term purposes, then Russia has already announced the reorientation of its export strategies for the bottomless Asian market. Therefore, investments in this project:
1) will help to acquire a lever of influence both Morocco and Nigeria;
2) are needed so that European companies do not become investors;
3) provide orders by Russian companies in advance for years;
4) prevent strengthening the American influence on the European gas market.
In the event that Russia really decided to agree on the construction of the gas pipeline, then this may indicate a very long strategic plans for the Russian leadership.
And what do you think, whether these actions of Russia are the ideology: “If you can’t defeat the crowd, lead it!” (From the work of Machiavelli "Sovereign")? And did not read Machiavelli in the Kremlin?
