On July 28, Intel management confirmed that it intends to close the company's business area related to the development and production of Optane solid -state drives.

Optane drives belong to the Storage Class Memory (SCM) class and read/recording performance surpass the traditional solid -state SSD discs, but are inferior to DRAM RAM modules and are positioned as a solution to ensure minimal delay in data application. The advantages of Optane technology are high wear resistance (drives are able to withstand millions of rewriting) and high speed of selective data access.

Initially, Intel has developed them since 2015. Together with Micron as part of the 3D XPOINT project, but in 2018, Micron left this project and sold Texas Instruments a factory on its factory, on which the Optane microcircuits were produced.

The Optane line now consists of two series of products. Optane Persistent Memory, produced in the form factor of standard DIMM modules and used as replacing traditional energy-dependent DIMMs, are intended for the data centers. The solid -state disks based on Optane are produced for high -performance servers and PCs, in which they perform the function of a high -speed cache to accelerate access to data stored on slower SSD solid -state disks based on Nand memory.

For most analysts, Intel's refusal to continue Optane development was not a big surprise, because this project did not reach the level of profitability. According to some estimates, the annual losses of Intel associated with this area of ​​business amounted to from $ 500 million to $ 1.5 billion.

Although leading manufacturers of servers and schedules supported the use of Optane in their products as an option to improve performance, and Oracle even used it in his Exadata systems as a standard solution to reduce data accession, the volume of sales of the drive was insignificant to pay for Intel investments In its development and reduce its cost due to mass production.

Closing the Optane project means the full maintenance of Intel from the solid -state memory market. Prior to this, the company in 2020 sold SK Hynix corporations its Nand Flash -Mapamy branch, along with its production facilities for the production of microcircuits in order to focus its resources on Optane development.
