COI: improper bite threatens tooth loss
Researchers at Tohoku University have found that a so-called “backbite,” where the upper front teeth sit inside the lower teeth, is associated with an increased likelihood of tooth loss in adults.
As part of the work, the authors studied data from over 17 thousand people over 40 years of age who participated in the national cohort project Tohoku Medical Megabank.
According to the authors, the results demonstrate that tooth retention depends not only on caries or gum disease, but also on the distribution of chewing loads.
Scientists note the need for regular dental examinations and bite assessment by an orthodontist.
