We are talking about microplastics: Russian scientists have found out where it is most abundant on Lake Baikal
During the work, experts discovered accumulations of small particles of artificial origin in the immediate vicinity of ship berths, as well as on the surface of certain types of algae.
The researchers conducted a comprehensive analysis, studying samples of water, bottom sediments, plants and fauna in the southern part of the lake.
The average level of microplastic pollution in Lake Baikal is several tens of particles per cubic meter of water.
Another reservoir of microplastics is algae, especially species with a slimy surface to which polluting particles easily stick.
Scientists from the Voronezh State University of Engineering Technologies (VSUIT) have developed and patented a new method for purifying industrial emissions using a water blanket.
For cleaning, the dust collector uses innovative methods of impinging waves and water mist, which ensure the interaction of air flows with liquid without the use of additional devices for generating waves or fog.
The sample itself consists of a water purification module housing, which includes contaminated air, water containers, an air duct, a droplet eliminator, a housing with cleaning filters and an outlet for clean air.
The device purifies the air from suspended substances, including dust, by creating a fine veil of swirling liquid, as well as a labyrite-type drop catcher.
A report on the work was published in The BMJ.
Scientist Hu Zheng, working at Wuhan University, and his colleagues tested the new method on 3,068 women aged 20-54 years.
The data obtained by scientists showed that the analysis of menstrual blood from a specially created pad is quite informative.
Specialists from the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS plan to invite colleagues from China for joint scientific activities.
As Valentin Parmon told the TASS agency, the design began in 2007, and the first stage facilities were completed in 2023.
In 2025, a unique multi-wavelength radioheliograph came into operation, including a field of 528 radio telescopes.
Parmon added that the main direction of international interaction between SB RAS scientists remains the countries of Central Asia, Mongolia and northern China.
