The era of cold is over: in 2026 the Earth is threatened by Super El Niño
In April 2026, the average surface temperature of the world's oceans (excluding polar ice zones) reached 21 °C, which was the second highest value on record.
As a result, both 2023 and 2024 broke temperature records, with 2024 being the hottest on record.
The only very strong El Niño this century (2015-2016) was of similar magnitude, with water temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean 2.8°C above normal. A normal El Niño increases global temperatures by about 0.5 degrees.
Forecasts indicate that 2026 is likely to become the second warmest year on record.
